Sewer Flooding or Water Supply Failures: Compensation From Your Water Company (UK)

When a water company floods your home with sewage or leaves you without supply, the distress and damage are real — and you are entitled to compensation. Much of it is even automatic. Here is what you can claim.

The Guaranteed Standards Scheme (GSOS)

Water companies in England and Wales must meet minimum service standards under the GSOS, and pay fixed compensation when they fail — often automatically, but check, because payments are frequently missed. Set amounts apply for things like:

Internal sewer flooding — claim more than the fixed sum

For sewage flooding inside your home, the GSOS payment is significant, but it may not cover your full loss. On top of the standard payment you can claim for damage, clean-up, alternative accommodation, and ruined belongings — the company has a duty not to negligently flood your property.

How to claim

  1. Report immediately and get a reference; photograph everything and keep receipts.
  2. Ask explicitly for the GSOS payment due, plus compensation for your actual losses.
  3. Escalate to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW) if the company stalls — they handle water complaints free.

A claim letter template

Dear [Water company],

Re: [Sewer flooding / supply failure] at [address] on [date]

I am claiming the compensation due under the Guaranteed Standards Scheme for this
[interruption / low pressure / missed appointment / flooding], plus £[amount] for
the damage and costs I incurred: [list, with photos and receipts].

Please confirm payment within [reasonable period]. If unresolved, I will refer my
complaint to the Consumer Council for Water.

Yours faithfully,
[Your name and account details]

Do not assume the automatic payment is all you are owed — for internal flooding especially, claim your full losses on top, and use the CCW if the company drags its feet.
